In the Hukawng Valley of western Kachin State, dense gold dust and nuggets come to rest in the bottom of the pan as movement separates them from sand and pebbles. Simple bamboo sluices (tilted boards) lined with fibers from banana leaves trap and separate gold from rocks and sand.

Small scale miners who use these methods often handle mercury with their bare hands. A 2002 Wildlife Conservation Society survey counted 245 manual sluice and gold panning operations along the Irrawaddy River between Myitkyina and Bhamo (approx. 170 km).

The CLMV logistics system, like any other macro-level logistics systems, is composed of; Shippers, traders, and consignees; service providers; regional and national institutions, policies, rules; and transport/ communications infrastructure.

Production constraints of rice production in Myanmar are problems in rain-fed lowland production include inadequate labor for transplanting, inadequate supply and high cost of fertilizer, and flooding in low areas.

Farmers who practice wet seeding face problems of insect pests, poor crop establishment, and weeds in upper fields. Modern varieties are cultivated widely with very little application of chemical fertilizers, contributing to a decline in soil fertility.

At Myanmar's central government level, there are eight ministries in charge of rural energy issues which concern approx. 2/3 of Myanmar’s population, the responsibilities seem highly fragmented with none of the ministries being clearly noticeable in the lead, at present.

The Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Forestry (MoECaF) is in charge of the wood fuel sector. Biogas and biomass gasification are technologies promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Ministry of Agriculture & Irrigation is in charge of the use of agro-waste for fuel (direct combustion) as well as biofuels.

Biocoal/Biochar introduces a new class of solid biomass-based fuel for global power and heat generation as power generation companies aim to increase the amount of power and heat from renewable energy sources.

Combustion of biomass, either in dedicated boilers or co-firing with coal, has been identified as a potential way forward, however, it has been proven challenging. High procurement costs, low energy density, high water content as well as challenging logistics, storage and handling hurdles are the major drawbacks in terms of efficiency and combustion optimization.
