Inflation is forecast to average 5.1% this year and next. A lower fiscal deficit and reduced credit to the government from the central bank should dampen inflation over the medium term.

The hydropower potential of the country’s rivers is estimated to be more than 100,000 megawatts (MW).  Myanmar has identified 92 potential large hydropower projects with a total installed capacity of 46,101 MW.

Proven gas reserves total 11.8 trillion cubic feet (tcf) with huge potential for discovery. A third of the country’s $13.6 billion in foreign direct investment is in the oil and gas sector (as of September 2011). Myanmar is one of the five major energy exporters in the region, particularly of natural gas.

18 Yangon Region Industrial Zones to receive 5 hours of daily electricity

Power Lines to Economic Zones in Yangon Image David DuByne 2013The Ministry of Electric Power announced on May 30 that it will resume supplying five hours a day of electricity to 18 industrial zones in Yangon Region, but told small- and medium-sized enterprises outside the zones to remain off the national grid and rely solely on generators.

The supply will be either from 7am to 12pm or from 12pm to 5pm.

U Nyan Tun Oo said on May 28 that power depended on rainfall. “It depends on the amount of rainfall. Hydropower relies on water in the [reservoirs of] dams … if there is not enough rain then we cannot generate enough power.” [Read more…]

The scale of the challenge is enormous. The 2013 McKinsey study estimates that $150 billion will be needed for new urban infrastructure. Yangon, Mandalay and other large cities will require no less than 10,000 kilometres of new roads, 113 million square feet of residential buildings, 27 million square feet of commercial floor space and 140 hospitals – all within 17 years.  For foreign companies, the price is set at US$ 6.06 per thousand cubic feet

 Myanmar nationals 1,000 kyats per 165 cubic feet.

Myanmar Geothermal ResourcesMyanmar is one of the countries with numerous geothermal resources that could be represented as an additional source of energy to fulfill its future energy requirements.

Hot springs are found in Kachin State, Shan State, Kayah State, the Southern Part of Rakhine State in Kyaukphyu, Central Myanmar Area, Shwebo Monywa Area and especially in Mon State and Taninthayi Division. A total of 93 hot springs have so far been recorded and identified.

Myanmar’s Beans & Pulses earning drops by $15 Million in 2013

Myanmar beans and pulsesMyanmar’s export earning from Beans & Pulses in the first two months of fiscal year 2013-14 has dropped compared to the same period in 2012, according to the Ministry of Commerce. Beans earning between April 1 and May 17 this year was US$119.56 million, fallen from US$134.54 million earned in the same period last year.

Beans are the major export commodity of Myanmar. Over 160,000 tonnes of different kinds of beans have been exported in this fiscal year. Among them, over 60,000 tonnes of exported beans are mung beans, whose total earning alone was US$51 million.

Speculators rush to Dala Township on talks of Dala-Yangon Bridge

Dala Township Yangon MyanmarBuyers are once again descending on Dala Township amidst a revival of speculation that a bridge will be built across the Yangon River, as transportation infrastructure projects that make commuting easier boost property prices in the city’s outskirts across the city.

A bridge to Dala has sparked a boom in land sales in the township, with prices doubling since December. “The attraction is Dala’s closeness to downtown for prices that are only a fraction of those in the city centre.” One acre in Dala is selling for K7-K8 million, up from K3-K4 million in December, realtors say. Kawthoung Border Trade Post Myanmar Wide ViewBecause of poor transportation of the Mawtaung Trade Zone and poor customer services at fish wholesale dealers from Thailand, Myanmar fish merchants will be using Kawthoung and Ranong border trade routes as an alternative during the rainy season.

Mawtaung trade zone was opened last month and it still needs to improve road conditions. However, transportation charges are less expensive than the water route through Kawthoung and Ranong. The goods will be transported in short time as well said Myeik wholesale fish market dealers.

Water Dams in Shan StateThe new contract would propose the formation of a new company called the Sino-Kachin Hydropower Company. This company could invest and manage several hydropower dams in Kachin state as a Build-Operate Transfer for twenty-five years of operation.

Equity would be 30% of total costs and it would accept a small fraction of equity investment from the Kachin state or electric company and the Myanmar electric company.

CPC's agreement to buy a 30 per cent stake in a Myanmar gas and oil field from mainland China's state-run Sinopec Group.
