Chinese Subsidies retained for green cars through 2013. In 2012, sales of new-energy cars amounted to 12,791 units, almost double the number recorded in the previous year, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed.
The central government will increase its subsidies for energy-saving cars and vehicles that run on alternate fuel sources in 2013, a ministry official has said. According to the country's guideline on environmentally friendly vehicles, sales of new-energy cars are expected to total 500,000 units by the end of 2015. [Read more…]
China names five regions for Seawater Desalination pilot plants
The first batch of regions and companies have been selected to carry out seawater desalination pilots, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced. The list includes the cities of Shenzhen and Zhoushan, Luxixiang Island in Zhejiang Province, Binhai New Area in Tianjin, Bohai New Area in Hebei, and several industrial parks and companies.
The country aims to produce 2.2 million cubic meters of seawater-converted freshwater per day by 2015, compared with 660,000 cubic meters in 2011, according to the 2011-2015 plan.Industrial analysts estimated the development plan will require investment of around 21 billion yuan (3.35 billion U.S. dollars). Myanmar Ministry of Energy to auction 25 Offshore Oil and Gas Blocks
The Ministry of Energy will put about 25 offshore oil and gas exploration blocks up for auction in April, a Myanmar Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) official announced at the Myanmar Upstream Summit oil and gas conference on March 4.U Zaw Aung, the director of planning at the MOGE, added during the summit that Myanmar plans to put 18 onshore blocks up for bids in January 2014.

Singapore looks to Myanmar as potential food export source
National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said his ministry works closely with the local food industry to diversify food sources and said the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) will facilitate partnerships between Singaporean farmers and Myanmar supply chain partners.
He said MND is particularly hopeful of Myanmar becoming a good food source. Another potential item is seafood as the Myanmar seafood sector is well developed. [Read more…]
Low price Myanmar SIMs available in April says Thein Sein
President U Thein Sein said during a March 1 radio address that low-cost SIM cards would be released to the market in April. However, the president did not provide a price for the chips. But rumours have been spreading that the SIM cards will be sold for K20,000.

Iron ore stocks fall 13% at China’s major ports
China's major ports have seen their iron ore stockpiles fall to a three-year low due to lowered imports. As of March 8, combined iron ore inventories at 30 major Chinese ports declined by 2.98 million tonnes from a week ago to 66.54 million tonnes, the lowest level since mid-January 2010, data from mysteel.net, a Chinese Internet portal dedicated to the iron and steel industry.
The latest Chinese customs data indicates that the country imported 56.42 million tonnes of iron ore last month, a 13.17-percent drop year on year and 9.12 million tonnes short of the amount imported in January. The average imported price for foreign iron ore dipped 9.86 percent year on year to 124.79 U.S. dollars per tonne. [Read more…]

Myanmar to begin new Hanthawaddy International Airport, in July
Myanmar will begin construction of a new international airport, the Hanthawaddy International Airport, by July this year, local media reported Tuesday. Estimated to take three years to complete, the airport lies in central Bago region, covering an area of over 3,645 hectares, said the Newsweek.
The airport will be so designed as to handle 10 million passengers a year. Myanmar is also carrying out a plan of privatizing all domestic airport management businesses to promote the civil aviation industry. [Read more…]
China govt procurement price for Indica rice up 10% to 2600 yuan per ton
China will lift the minimum state procurement price for rice produced this year to encourage farmers to grow more grain and boost production. The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a statement that the minimum procurement price for early indica rice will be raised to 2,640 yuan (420 U.S. dollars) per tonne, up 10 percent from the 2012 price.
Meanwhile, the minimum procurement prices for mid-and-late indica rice and japonica rice will be set at 2,700 yuan and 3,000 yuan per tonne, up 8 percent and 7.14 percent, respectively. [Read more…]
Two 22-floor buildings get green light from Yangon officials
The Yangon City Development Committee has given two private companies permission to construct two 22-floor buildings in Yangon, officials said. Shwe Taung Company has received approval to construct a 22-floor building near Junction Square Centre in Kamayut Township and Mandalay Golden Wing Company has received approval to build another at the junction of West Horse Race Road and Sayasan Road in Bahan Township, officials said.
The committee has also approved plans for the 27-floor Kabar Aye Executive Residence and is examining another 15 plans to build high-rise buildings, including a 44-floor tower, a 38-floor tower and a 27-floor tower. [Read more…]
New Dragon Steel furnace to become operational today
China Steel Corp (CSC) said yesterday that a new furnace at its subsidiary, Dragon Steel Corp, would become operational today. “The new furnace is the final step in our five-year plan initiated in 2008, which aimed to invest NT$200 billion (US$6.7 billion) and increase our annual capacity to 20 million tonnes,” China Steel vice president Steve Lee said by telephone yesterday.
The furnace that will begin operating today can produce 2.5 million tonnes of hot-rolled sheets and coils, and these products would serve as raw materials for a plant in Vietnam, which is funded by CSC and Japan-based Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal, Lee said. [Read more…]

Energy has long been both the bane and the favored instrument in the foreign policy of governments. On the back of the shale gas boom and technological improvements in energy production, the US is predicted to take a giant leap toward this independence as it becomes the world's biggest gas producer by 2015.
Naturally, countries like China, which is estimated to hold more shale gas than the US and Canada combined, are hungry to learn the secret to their success. Harmful levels of Cadmium found in China’s Hunan produced rice
Rice produced in China's south-central Hunan province has been found to contain excessive level of harmful heavy metals, reports the Guangdong-based Nanfang Daily. The cadmium contamination was likely caused by pollutions in the rice paddies.
Shenzhen Cereals Group reported that the 10,000 tons of white rice it purchased in the province contained excessive levels of heavy metal. The company also failed to comply with a ruling from the local quality examination bureau that the tainted rice only be used for industrial applications, returning only 180 tons while selling the remainder back to the market with discounts. Taiwan’s China Steel Corp. raises prices $29 per metric ton March 2013
China Steel Corp., Taiwan's largest steel maker, has decided to raise domestic wholesale product prices for its April and May contracts from March due to rising demand from local firms in the middle and downstream steel making sector. Its products will see an average price hike of NT$802 (US$27.09) per metric ton or 3.81 percent for the April to March delivery period.
Under the latest price hikes, prices of steel plates, steel wire rod, hot-rolled steel, and cold-rolled steel will be raised by NT$78, NT$700, NT$1,069, and NT$896, respectively, per metric ton. Meanwhile, prices of electro-galvanized steel coils, electrical steel coils and hot-dipped zinc-galvanized steel have been raised by NT$800, NT$602, and NT$901, respectively, per metric ton.
