PDF Map Scans 15 individual Townships in Yangon, Myanmar

Mingalardon Township Yangon City Map ScanI bought a set of maps from one of those hard working guys selling printed materials as you wait at stop lights or in traffic jams around Yangon. I scanned the map set of 15 Townships of Yangon plus the full city map at 3500×4900 so you should have good detail.

I was able to find some better quality topographic maps from the British published in 1962. This set of Yangon scans will be good enough to get you to the places you need to visit. Especially if you are looking at places to rent, neighborhoods are easily recognizable.

Getting Investment Access to Myanmar, via Singapore

Si Oh Dan Jetty Waterfront Development Yangon Myanmar 2013 Image David DuByneWith Myanmar set to reintegrate into the world the question remains: how can smaller investors invest in Myanmar given that direct access is limited? The best way, DBS Vickers says in a note, is to “invest through foreign companies already in or expanding into Myanmar.”

Opportunities are abundant, it says, but pure plays are scarce. It tips Singapore-listed Yoma Strategic Holdings is the closest thing to a pure play. “With close to 100% of its land bank in Yangon, Yoma is a direct proxy to Myanmar’s booming real estate sector and is well positioned to benefit from Yangon’s severe demand/supply mismatch for quality residential, office, hotel/serviced apartment properties.”

Flicking the switch on Myanmar’s lights, TVs and washing machines

Electricity Usage Downtown Yangon Myanmar 2013 Image David DuByneBut of all the numbers that illustrate the insufficiency of Myanmar’s current energy architecture, perhaps the most startling is that even if electricity output doubles every five years, it will take the first of those five-year periods just to meet today’s needs. In the meantime, demand is projected to increase by 12% a year.

Nearly three-quarters of Myanmar’s people live without the ability to turn on the lights. In the capital, Naypyidaw, a little less than half of residents live without the ability to plug in a television, microwave or desk lamp. [Read more…]

Renewable Energy in Myanmar: Not Just Clean, It’s Necessary

Renewable Energy World Myanmar Tim Ferry authorMost of Myanmar is in a greenfield condition, with no legacy of fossil power generation — or any power generation — to work against or replace. Also, no one expects the central grid to expand into remote areas for at least a decade, if not longer. Flexible, decentralized community-based renewable energy systems like solar are therefore the best way to power the countryside. Solar lamps and water pumps are part of the equation, as is micro-hydro in the mountains and biomass gasifiers and charcoal makers in the rice belt and even tidal power along the coasts. Myanmar Looking to Laos as a model for off-grid renewable energy

Gravitational Vortex Power Micro Hydro Power PlantToday, Myanmar has an electrification rate hovering just above 25%. In rural areas, where 40 million people reside, energy access drops to barely more than 15%.

Laos, for example, had an electrification rate hovering just above 30% in 2000. Nearly 70% of the population lives in rural areas. The Government of Laos put an emphasis on off-grid renewable energy expansion; more than 10,000 solar home systems were deployed and numerous village mini-grids utilizing solar, small-hydro and biomass energy sources were established. Today, after little more than a decade, more than 7 in 10 Laotians have access to electricity. [Read more…]

With the new civilian Government taking office as of March 2011, the need to integrate all Myanmar energy sub-sectors under one umbrella was recognized and given priority, and the initiative to form a National Energy Management Committee (NEMC) and an Energy Development Committee (EDC) was expedited.

Yangon Myanmar Traffic Jam Paya Road Image David DuByneAfter 50 years of military rule, Myanmar’s democratic opening has been swift and startling, says Richard Cockett. Now the country needs to move fast to heal its ethnic divisions.

A walk around  Yangon, Myanmar’s biggest city and former capital, quickly makes it clear how far the country has fallen behind the rest of Asia over the past half-century. In large part the place is but a ghostly reminder of former glories. Under British colonial rule, before independence in 1948, Rangoon (as it was then) was a thriving, cosmopolitan entrepot, the capital of Burma, one of the region’s wealthiest countries. [Read more…]
